The $17B hedge fund will distribute approximately $2B to its investors as it aggressively shrinks its internal equity long/short operation. In a letter to clients, Walleye Capital confirmed it is shutting multiple equity pods and parting ways with the head of its equities business and a significant number of portfolio managers to reduce costs and adjust performance.
The restructuring comes after the firm recorded a 5.9% loss in October, its steepest monthly decline since March 2020. Walleye is now pivoting its investment strategy toward quantitative and volatility strategies and the use of external managers. The fund has not confirmed speculation that it is the anonymous seller currently auctioning $500M in data center loans.
