President Vladimir Putin's ultimate goals extend far beyond victory in Ukraine to the erosion of European political stability, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told Bloomberg in an exclusive interview. Merz warned against complacency, stating that Russia is actively pursuing a campaign to destabilize the continent's political order and the societies within it.

Russia and its allies, including North Korea and Iran, are attacking core achievements of the post-World War II era such as human rights, liberty, and the rule of law, Merz said. He noted that the threat to these values is frequently underestimated within Germany and represents a more aggressive assault than the physical conflict in Ukraine.
