The Canadian energy producer’s Q3 output reached 1.024 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, marking the first time the company has surpassed the 1 million mark since becoming independent 17 years ago. Alongside the production record, Cenovus announced the acquisition of oil-sands operator Athabasca Oil for an implied enterprise value of C$5.7B in cash and shares, a transaction that adds approximately 45 MBOE/d and 1.3B BOE in reserves to the company’s assets.
Net earnings for the quarter rose to C$3.36B, up from C$1.29B a year earlier, as refinery profits jumped to C$1.79B from C$364M. The spike in refining gains was driven by US refining margins of C$55.52 a barrel, which offset a 38% drop in downstream throughput to 437.2 Mbbls/d caused by a turnaround at its Lima facility. Cenovus returned C$1.9B to shareholders through dividends and buybacks and reduced its net debt to C$3.0B from C$5.3B.
