Attorney Ted Boutrous sent a formal communication to the administration’s legal team on behalf of Politico to answer demands regarding the publication’s coverage of senior staff. The letter, which was shared by journalist Brian Stelter, responds to a warning from White House counsel Will Scharf that the news organization would face unspecified consequences if it did not retract or correct reports concerning Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
The legal response follows a Tuesday night correction by Politico to one of three stories that alleged internal friction among staffers. Jason Miller, an associate of the administration, characterized that correction as a “big, big capitulation” to the pressures applied by Scharf and Communications Director Steven Cheung. The 48 hour window for mandatory changes expires Thursday, while President Trump has dismissed the reporting as fake news and denied plans to replace Wiles.
