Cryptocurrencies joined the post-election rout on Thursday, shedding $150 billion in value and triggering $1.03 billion in 24-hour liquidations as the US stock market wipeout reached $2.5 trillion in 60 minutes. Bitcoin fell 5.97% on Binance to $75,695.68 after touching a low of $75,568, and Ether dropped 7.29% to $2,247.74 as Democrats prepared to investigate Trump family business dealings, including crypto ventures. CoinGlass data showed $879.92 million in crypto positions were liquidated in four hours, including $818.90 million in longs, affecting 198,192 traders over 24 hours.
The selloff followed a Democratic sweep of both chambers of Congress that stoked fears of tighter AI regulation and slower data center buildouts, after Goldman Sachs estimated a Democratic victory could put 45% of planned US data center capacity at risk and lawmakers called for restrictions including a “ban on artificial superintelligence.” The Nasdaq Composite fell 5.1% into its second correction of the year, sitting more than 10% below its Oct 6 record, while the S&P 500 dropped 3.43% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost more than 1,100 points.
