The rescue mission follows a magnitude 7.7 earthquake on October 9 that injured at least 27 people and damaged more than 400 buildings, including 188 schools. While no deaths have been reported, the tremors collapsed roads and buildings in central Panama and triggered over 100 aftershocks. The US Geological Survey estimates that total economic losses from the disaster could range from 1% to 10% of Panama's GDP.
