Republicans who hold the majority in the Texas State Senate are scheduling a session this afternoon to discuss a restructuring of the chamber that would remove legislative authority from the state’s next lieutenant governor. The proposed move targets Vikki Goodwin, a Democrat who won the seat as part of a broader party sweep of top executive offices in the Nov 4 election.
The shift in leadership follows the defeat of Republican Dan Patrick, whose opposition to casino gaming was a primary obstacle to gambling legalization in Texas. In addition to the lieutenant governorship, Democrats captured the governorship, the attorney general’s office, and the railroad commissioner’s seat, as well as roles for the comptroller and the agriculture and land commissioners. The outcome has renewed prospects for online sports betting legalization during the 2027 legislative session, given that Goodwin has supported a public vote on the issue.
