The Social Security Administration updated approximately 50 million files out of a total of 330 million U.S. citizen records, incorporating 17 million missing death dates and rectifying 33.5 million entries that had missing or inaccurate citizenship information.

This operation is the largest cleanup of Social Security Numbers in the agency's 91 year history. The administration partnered with the Department of State to identify dates of death and the Department of Homeland Security to audit citizenship status, seeking to improve the integrity of vital records used by state and federal agencies to validate identity.
