Naval Historian Craig L. Symonds Dies After 30 Years at Naval Academy

Culture7 days ago

The U.S. Naval Institute announced the death of Dr. Craig L. Symonds, an award-winning author and professor emeritus who spent his career studying maritime history. Based at the U.S. Naval Academy, Symonds spent 30 years teaching generations of naval officers and readers about the people, decisions, and sacrifices that shaped naval history.

In May 2023, Symonds addressed the 150th Annual Meeting of the Naval Institute to discuss the long-term relationship between the Navy and its independent forum. His remarks were subsequently published as an article in Proceedings, where he characterized the organization as a sounding board rather than an echo chamber.
