Pike, 50, regained consciousness and began speaking Oct. 6 after several days unconscious and on a ventilator. She later began walking in her hospital room, but her lawyers reported cognitive challenges, “profound psychological trauma,” pneumonia, a blood clot and severe arm injuries. They allege the execution drug leaked from her veins into surrounding tissue.
Gov. Bill Lee halted scheduled executions for the rest of 2026 and ordered an independent review after the failure, Tennessee’s second this year. Pike’s attorneys are seeking commutation of her death sentence for the 1995 murder of Colleen Slemmer, 19, and say the state has made no promise to forgo another execution attempt.
