A proposed US strategy to launch a “short, intense” military operation against Iran after the Nov 3 midterm elections would lead to a devastating escalation of the current conflict, according to Senator Chris Murphy. Speaking after a congressional military briefing, Murphy described the administration’s plan to potentially target nuclear sites and civilian infrastructure as “insane,” warning that such an escalation would violate the rules of war and fail to achieve its strategic objectives.
The warnings come as the US military prepares for potential strikes by restocking munitions, preparing fighter jets, and relocating a Patriot missile defense system from Texas to the region. While White House official Anna Kelly stated that the US will not attack Iran before the midterms, President Donald Trump has said that the end of the Iran war is solely a “question of when” he chooses to end it, noting that “anything is possible” regarding further military action once the elections conclude.
