Wagenius is serving a 70 month federal prison sentence and must pay $294,978 in restitution for stealing call and text metadata from over 100 million AT&T customers. His group targeted at least 10 organizations and attempted to extort at least $1M, although Wagenius personally earned only about $1,500 from sales. While awaiting sentencing, he used other inmates' email accounts to access a commercial AI tool to generate exploit code and research prison escapes, prosecutors say.
