Joe Sokol of The Maine Wire was targeted in a violent encounter on October 1 in retaliation for his investigative reporting. A man identified as a methadone patient attempted to kill the journalist because of his coverage of a local treatment facility that has received $25M in Medicaid funding since 2018. The Maine Wire reports that the encounter was captured on video and that the Bangor police department is cooperating with the organization to pursue the case.

Employees at the clinic allegedly acted as accessories to the crime by covering up for the attacker instead of contacting law enforcement. The Maine Wire stated it will take all necessary legal actions to demand justice for the assault on its reporter.
