The expansion follows a report from Common Sense Media and the Youth AI Safety Institute that labeled the teen bot an "unacceptable risk." An audit of 4,000 prompts found that conversations regarding self-harm or eating disorders lasted up to one hour without triggering parental alerts, and hotline referrals dropped from 33% to 23%. OpenAI, which provided $10 million in funding to the researchers, disputes the findings and says some testing may have occurred before parental controls had fully activated during the 3 hour setup window.
