The pipeline aims to diversify Canada's economy by reducing its reliance on the US, which currently buys approximately 90% of Alberta's oil. Diverting these heavy barrels to international buyers may tighten supply for refineries in the US Midwest and Gulf Coast that depend on Canadian crude. The project will follow the existing Trans Mountain corridor with ownership split equally between the federal government and Alberta, and a minimum 10% stake for Indigenous communities.
