Japan Lifts Sanctions on 16 Syrian Entities to Aid Reconstruction

A selection of Syrian energy and financial firms has been cleared from Tokyo's list of asset-freezing targets. The government removed 16 entities, including oil companies, in a move intended to improve the current international situation and strengthen bilateral relationships. While these restrictions were eased, Japan has maintained certain sanctions against Bashar al-Assad and other associated individuals.

The policy change is designed to facilitate the reconstruction and stability of Syria following the collapse of the Assad family's rule in December 2024. Tokyo is adjusting its diplomatic and economic measures to support the rebuilding of Syrian infrastructure under the new geopolitical landscape.
