Fields Medalist Jacob Tsimerman Forgoes OpenAI Role to Lead New MAISI

OpenAI has committed $10 million in API credits and access to its latest frontier models to support the Mathematical AI Safety Institute (MAISI). Jacob Tsimerman, a Fields medalist, will lead the new independent research organization as its founding Scientific Director and opted not to join OpenAI as an employee. Tsimerman aims to recruit other mathematicians to transition into AI safety roles to provide research for the wider industry.

The institute is currently organizing a multi-lab AI safety workshop for next year and is in discussions with other frontier AI labs and safety organizations to establish collaborations. Tsimerman described the need for action on AI safety as extremely urgent in his announcement on Oct. 15.
