Google Researcher Quits Over Speed of New AI Chip Generation

A researcher at Google's Google DeepMind division resigned on Sept. 25 after stating that artificial intelligence is developing too quickly. The employee, who identified as @rocallahan, noted that their team had been designing a new generation of chips to make AI faster and more cost-effective, a progression they believed had become unsustainable.

The resignation was shared by AI safety advocate Eliezer Yudkowsky and other figures in the field. While the researcher expressed fondness for their colleagues and the core of their work, they concluded that the pace of hardware advancements and the resulting acceleration of AI capabilities necessitated their departure from the company.
