Microsoft Unveils First Post-Quantum zkVM Outperforming Rivals by 39x

Magnetar records speeds between 7.2 and 8.7 MHz on a laptop, surpassing current zero-knowledge virtual machine (zkVM) options across 15 separate workloads. The tool, released by Microsoft Research, is a general purpose system based on the RV64 architecture that provides post-quantum security using only standard hashes. This approach eliminates the need for lattices, curves, or Poseidon and is designed specifically to support recursion.

An optimized version of the architecture reaches 9.5 to 12.8 MHz while maintaining what the developers term conservative security. The system's performance represents a 10 to 39 times improvement over existing zkVMs, establishing it as the fastest implementation of its kind currently available.
