Polygon to Burn 100 Million POL Tokens Via First Permissionless Contract

The Polygon Foundation is launching a decentralized mechanism that allows any community member to trigger the permanent removal of tokens from the total supply. CEO Sandeep Nailwal stated that 100 million POL will be destroyed once a burn contract reaches the mainnet and receives Security Council sign off. This update shifts the token's deflationary process to a permissionless model, allowing the initial burn to happen instantly.

Network revenue totaled $24.5 million for the 2026 year to date period, and base fees deposited 121 million POL into the collector. Polygon currently handles 5,000 transactions per second to support an increase in payment and consumer application activity.
