AI Firms Build Phones for 100B Parameter Models by 2028

Qualcomm is witnessing a shift in the smartphone market as its partners in the artificial intelligence sector begin to manufacture their own handheld hardware. CEO Cristiano Amon disclosed that leading AI firms are targeting the ability to run 100B parameter models continuously on a device by 2028. While Amon declined to identify the companies, he confirmed that several entities at the forefront of the industry are already building these phones to enable constant on-device processing.

The remarks were made during the Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii, where Amon also predicted that smart glasses will become the dominant category of AI wearables. To challenge the software lock-in created by Nvidia's CUDA, Qualcomm recently acquired Modular. The drive for 100B parameter on-device capabilities suggests a move toward greater vertical integration among AI developers seeking to control the hardware hosting their models.
