Google's SynthID Wins TIME Best Invention Honor for 180B Assets

Google DeepMind has applied tracking markers to more than 180 billion images and videos to identify content generated by artificial intelligence. The magazine TIME recognized the tool, known as SynthID, as one of its Best Inventions of 2026 after it also watermarked 240,000 years of audio. The system embeds imperceptible tags during the content creation process to maintain quality while making AI generated media easier to distinguish from other sources.

The technology has recently expanded into biology with the release of SynthID Bio. While Google developers state the tool is a step toward a more transparent information ecosystem, they note that watermarking is not a total solution for misinformation. A Universal Detector is currently available for users to test the labels.
