The incident occurred at approximately 3:30 pm on Murphy Street, where Haines was hit by a white Land Rover that allegedly also contained a knife. While local law enforcement said they had no prior knowledge of specific threats against Haines, colleagues in the Australian Parliament have denounced the event as an assassination attempt against a serving member of the legislature.
