The state’s Democratic-Farmer-Labor party shifted the balance of power in the Minnesota legislature following Tuesday’s elections, ending a long-standing deadlock in the lower chamber. The House moved from a 67-67 tie to a 77-57 DFL majority, while the party’s lead in the Senate expanded from a one-seat edge to a 39-28 advantage.
Republicans lost 10 seats in the House and six in the Senate, with the heaviest losses occurring in suburban districts such as Maple Grove and Lakeville, as well as the St. Cloud and Duluth regions. In the Senate, the GOP gained SD4, where Austin Peterson defeated Rob Kupec by 4 votes. House Republican Nolan West retained his seat in Blaine by 22 votes, a sharp decline from the 4,196 vote margin he held in the previous cycle.
