ICE Releases Kashmiri Filmmaker Arfat Sheikh on Bond

The director of the festival winning movie 'Saffron Kingdom' is out of government custody following a detention at Washington Dulles airport. Arfat Sheikh, a Kashmiri filmmaker, was released on bond from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody on Oct. 9 after being held since Sept. 24, according to a campaign of his friends and relatives.

Sheikh entered the US on a student visa in 2019 and filed for asylum in 2020. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed the arrest, stating Sheikh illegally overstayed his visa and that his pending application did not provide legal status. Sheikh produced his debut film fearing repercussions from Indian authorities who bar critics from returning home for work deemed anti India, according to WABE radio.
